South Korea’s Doosan Enerbility Co. announced that top executives from Manila Electric Company (Meralco), the largest power company in the Philippines, visited its headquarters in Changwon on Tuesday. The visit aimed to bolster cooperation on various energy projects in the Philippines.
Meralco’s delegation, led by Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan, included several key executives. Founded in 1903, Meralco supplies 55% of the Philippines’ electricity, servicing 39 cities and 72 municipalities. The visit featured tours of Doosan’s facilities, including those producing equipment for the Korean-type APR1400 reactor and 380-megawatt power gas turbines, as well as a forging plant with the world’s largest 17,000-ton press.
This engagement is set to accelerate collaboration on nuclear power projects, particularly the stalled Bataan nuclear power plant. Plans include exploring small modular reactors (SMRs), combined cycle power plants, and gas turbines. Doosan Enerbility has been ramping up local marketing efforts, showcasing South Korean gas and hydrogen turbines to potential customers like Meralco and officials from the Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Manila last year.
The Philippines presents a strategic market for exporting Korean gas turbines, operating on the same 60 Hz frequency as South Korea, enhancing compatibility and potential for future projects.
